King Trivia Alternative

Keep the pub quiz, host it in-house

King Trivia sends a Quizmaster who runs a paper pub quiz while teams write answers in quiz books. Quizado gives that Quizmaster job to somebody already on your rota, and does the scoring for them.

The short answer

King Trivia supplies the Quizmaster and the quiz; Quizado supplies the quiz, the scoring and the screen, and leaves the Quizmaster job to a member of your own staff.

Por Que Cambiar de King Trivia?

The night lives with one person

A booked Quizmaster is very good, which is exactly the problem when they change jobs or move markets. The regulars followed the person as much as the quiz.

When the night runs from your account, the questions, teams and standings stay in the building. A new server can pick up the console and keep Tuesday going.

Marking seven rounds by hand

Their format is seven rounds, including a Picture round, a Guess Who round and general knowledge rounds, with answers written in quiz books. Someone reads and totals every sheet.

Quizado scores each answer the moment it arrives. There is no pile of paper, and no gap in the room while the totals are added up.

A fixed cost on a quiet week

A hosted package is the same cost in the last week of January as it is on a Friday in December, whether nine teams show up or twenty-nine.

A software plan does not scale with the door. Start free, move up when the player cap starts to bite, and cancel from the account if the night stops working.

Phones are the enemy of paper trivia

Written quizzes have to police the room: their published rules include no outside sources, such as phones. Somebody has to watch for it all night.

Quizado puts the phone to work instead. It is the answer pad and the buzzer, and in a buzzer round the host console locks the first buzz it receives.

One format for the whole year

A house format is a strength for a company and a limit for a venue. Every week has the same shape, whatever else is happening that month.

Change the rounds week to week. Run a knockout round in the last half hour, and on Hospitality Group a Music Bingo card in the break or a whole Family Feud night before a holiday.

You cannot try it on a Sunday

Booking a hosted night means agreeing a slot, a price and a start date before you know whether your room wants a quiz at all.

Open a free account this afternoon and run a short round tonight with staff and whoever is at the bar. Nothing is booked and nothing is owed.

Que Hace Diferente a Quizado

Construido desde cero para bar trivia moderno y eventos en vivo.

A console anyone on the rota can drive

The host screen shows the next question, the timer and who is winning. There is one obvious button. That is deliberate: the person holding it should be watching the room, not the laptop.

The phone is the answer sheet

Players scan a QR code on the TV and answer in the browser. No app, no login, and no handwriting to decipher at eleven at night.

Buzzer rounds settled on the console

The host console locks the first buzz it receives and shows the queue in order, so nobody has to adjudicate who shouted first.

Picture rounds on the big screen

Media questions carry an image, a clip of audio or a video, on Trivia Pro and up. A picture round becomes something the whole room can see instead of a photocopy per table.

Live standings on the TV

The external display window puts questions, timers and the leaderboard on any screen you already have. Teams can see the gap they need to close before the last round.

Rounds written for your room

Built-in question packs cover the general knowledge. From Trivia Pro up, AI generation writes a bar trivia round about the local team, the brewery down the road or the film everyone watched last week.

Who actually runs the night

The center of the King Trivia product is a person. Their site describes a Quizmaster who hosts the game and asks the questions while players write answers in King Trivia Quiz Books, gaining points for each one they get right. The rounds include a Picture round, a Guess Who round and general knowledge rounds, and at the end scores are tallied and the winning team is announced. Their rules are simple enough to say out loud: no shouting answers, no outside sources such as phones, and the Quizmaster is always right.

They also publish an In-House Hosted package for venues that would rather use their own people. Their description of it is that the venue uses its already beloved staff in a way that lets them interact with guests in a new, approachable and fun way, that King Trivia will train your host the same way they train their own, and that you get everything a fully hosted event includes except the King Trivia host. They do not publish a venue rate for either package, so ask them for a quote. That is worth knowing before you assume the choice is only between a booked host and doing it alone.

So the real question is not whether in-house hosting works. Both companies agree that it does. The question is what the in-house host is holding. With a paper format they are holding a stack of quiz books and a pen. With Quizado they are holding a console that has already done the marking.

What your bar manager needs on the first Tuesday

Here is the whole kit list. One device to host from: a Windows, macOS or Linux laptop, an iPad, an Android tablet, or just a browser tab. One screen the room can see, which is usually the TV you already show sport on. A microphone if the room is big. That is it. There is no box to install, no tablets to hand out and nothing shipped to the venue.

The evening runs like this. Your manager opens the game, the display window goes on the TV and shows a join code and QR code. Teams scan it as they sit down and put in a team name. The console shows question one; your manager reads it out and the room answers on their phones. When the timer ends the correct answer appears on the screen and the leaderboard moves. Nobody collects anything and nobody adds anything up.

The skill your manager still needs is the one no software supplies: reading a question clearly, keeping the pace up, and knowing when the room needs a break. Give them the running order the day before so they have read the questions once. Ask them to do a dry run on a quiet shift. After two weeks it is a routine shift task, and the second person you train will learn it in one night.

What it costs in staff hours rather than a host fee

King Trivia does not publish venue pricing on their site, so check with them for current pricing on both the fully hosted and the In-House Hosted packages. The comparison you can make without numbers is between one invoice and some hours.

Count the hours honestly. Preparing a two-hour night in Quizado is about twenty minutes once you are used to it, most of which is picking packs and reviewing one generated round. Running it costs the two hours it runs, and about ten minutes of setup. Nothing is left over afterwards; the season table updates itself. Three hours a week from someone already scheduled is the true figure, and it drops as your saved question library grows.

What you get back for those hours is ownership. The team names, the season standings and every question you have ever written stay in your account. If your host leaves, the night does not. If you open a second site, the same account runs both, with separate teams and separate tables.

Who should stay, who should switch

Book King Trivia if...

A booked Quizmaster earns the fee in these rooms.

  • +You want a trained host in the building, not software
  • +Being listed on a national Where To Play page is worth money to you
  • +Your regulars love the paper quiz book and would notice it going
  • +The venue wifi is unreliable and a paper round is safer

Run it on Quizado if...

Venues that take the quiz in-house usually say one of these.

  • +A member of staff already wants the microphone on a Tuesday
  • +You would rather not mark a stack of answer sheets by hand
  • +You want to test a quiz night before committing to a booking
  • +You want the teams, the standings and the logo on screen to stay with the bar

How to switch in 3 steps

1

Pick your in-house host first

Decide who is holding the microphone before you touch the software. Choose the person who enjoys talking to a full room, not the person with the most free hours.

2

Run a dry night on the free plan

Build a short game from a built-in starter pack and run it on a quiet shift with staff and a few regulars. Test the TV, the QR code and the microphone in the same hour.

3

Fix the night and open a season

Keep the same weekday and start time for at least six weeks, then start a league table on Trivia Pro so standings carry over. Regulars come back for a position, not just for one good night.

For Quizmasters who want their own bookings

If you work as a Quizmaster, none of this is an argument against your job. The room is loud, the timing is yours, and reading a question so a table of eight actually hears it is a skill that took you months. Software does not do that part and is not trying to.

What Quizado gives you is a way to sell the same evening on your own account. Corporate parties, birthdays, staff away days and the venues no company has a route to are all bookings you can take with a laptop and a phone. Paid plans hold several venues at once, so each regular gig keeps its own team list and its own season table, and from Trivia Pro up the display carries your own logo rather than anybody else's.

Practically, the free plan is enough to run a first paid private party for a small group, and one paid month covers a season of a weekly booking. Plenty of hosts keep their company routes and use Quizado for the work the company does not sell.

Where King Trivia is the better buy

They are a large pub quiz company in America, with a trained host network, a house format that has been run in a great many rooms and a venue listing that brings players to your door. Quizado gives you none of those. It gives you the tools and expects one of your own people to do the hosting.

Yes, either way. King Trivia publishes an In-House Hosted package where they train your host and supply the game. Quizado is the software route: your staff run it from a laptop or tablet and the app handles the questions and the scoring. Both work. The difference is what your host has to do between rounds.
There is a free plan that runs a full bar trivia night for up to sixteen players with the built-in starter packs and the big-screen display, and no card is needed. Writing your own question sets starts on Trivia Pro, which also adds media rounds, monthly AI credits, leagues and a custom logo. Family Feud, Jeopardy and Music Bingo are on Hospitality Group. Current figures are on the pricing page.
No. Quizado does not print or supply answer sheets. Every answer is entered on a phone and scored automatically, so there is nothing to photocopy before the shift and nothing to mark afterwards.
The free plan allows up to sixteen players. Every paid plan lifts that cap, and because the scoring is automatic a bigger room does not slow the night down the way a bigger stack of paper does.
Yes, on Trivia Pro and above. Media questions carry an image, audio or video, so the picture goes on the TV for the whole room instead of on a sheet per table. Name That Tune rounds work the same way with audio.
The account belongs to the venue, so the question library, the team list and the season standings stay put. Train the next person on a quiet shift and the following week runs as normal. That is the main practical argument for keeping the night in-house.
No. There is no offline mode. The host device and every player phone need a connection, because the whole night runs live through the host console. If your venue has known dead spots, test where the host will stand before the first night.
