Trivia Host Jobs: What They Pay and How to Get One
Who hires trivia hosts, what the work is, and what one national company pays per event. Plus the other way in: book a bar yourself and keep the whole fee.
What a trivia host job is
A trivia host runs a quiz night in a bar, a restaurant or a taproom: reads the questions, keeps the pace, settles the arguments and names the winner. A typical night lasts about two hours, plus the time to set up and pack down. It is evening work on weeknights, which is why it fits around a day job or a course.
There are two ways to get paid for it. A trivia company hires you, sends you to its venues and pays you per event. Or you sell the night to a bar yourself and the bar pays you. The first is a job. The second is a small business. This guide covers both, with the published numbers and where they come from.
We make hosting software, so we are not neutral about the second way. We have kept the two apart all the same: the section on company jobs says what those jobs give you that going alone does not.
Das bekommst du
Gemacht für Moderatoren und Locations, die vom ersten Tag an professionell wirken müssen.
Rehearse before the interview
Run a full Trivia game for friends on the free plan, with up to 4 player phones. An audition goes better when you have already hosted a night from start to finish.
The same job on any device
Quizado works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android and the web. The laptop or tablet you own is enough to practise on.
Players answer on their phones
Teams scan a QR code and play from their own phones. There are no answer sheets to collect and no buzzer boxes to carry.
Scoring is done for you
Scores add up on their own and show on the big screen. You spend the night with the room, not with a spreadsheet.
Questions ready to play
Free question packs let you host a first game tonight. Family Face-Off and QuizoParty are on every plan when you want a game-show night.
A demo for a bar manager
If you pitch a bar yourself, show the night on a phone and the venue screen in a few minutes. A manager who has seen it says yes sooner than one who has only heard about it.

How much do trivia host jobs pay?
Few trivia companies print what they pay. One national hosted-trivia company does: its quizmaster handbook, still online, lists basic pay of $60 an event for a new host, $70 after 100 events and $80 after 250. Those rates are listed as of October 2021, and the handbook says pay goes out once a month through payroll.
That is one company, and local operators pay more or less than it does. Ask three questions before you accept any hosting job: what the pay per event is, whether set-up and travel time are paid, and how many nights a week you can expect. A two-hour quiz is closer to three and a half hours of your evening once you count the drive and the set-up.
For scale, the 2026 venue sales sheet of that same company starts at $195 per show. The gap is not pure profit: it pays for the sales team, the question writers, the cover hosts and the client managers. It does show what a bar is prepared to spend on a hosted night, which matters if you ever sell one yourself.
How to become a trivia host for a company
Start with the quiz nights you can reach. Go to two or three, note which company runs each one, and look for a hosting or careers page on its website. Companies hire by area, because a host has to live near the venues, so a company that runs a night near you is the one most likely to need you.
What gets you hired is not trivia knowledge. It is being reliable, being heard at the back of a loud room, and staying friendly with the team that disputes every answer. Bar work, teaching, stage work and stand-up are all good evidence. If you have none of those, host a night for friends, record two minutes of it, and send that.
A company job has real advantages. Somebody else sold the bar, somebody else wrote and checked the questions, and somebody covers your night when you are ill. You turn up, host and go home. If that is the part of the work you want, it is a fair deal.
The other trivia host job: your own night
The alternative is to be the company. You walk into a bar with a quiet weeknight, offer a four-week trial, and the bar pays you the whole fee. You also do the selling and build the games, and nobody covers for you. Most people who try it are fine at hosting and never do the selling, so treat finding the bar as the real job.
The cost of trying is small. A laptop, an HDMI cable and the software are the whole kit, because players use their own phones. A Quizado subscription is a flat price with no fee per show and no cut of what the bar pays you, and the free plan is enough for a practice night. This page does not promise an income: your city and the number of nights you sell decide it.
You do not have to choose on day one. You can keep your company nights and add one bar of your own on a free evening. If you host for a company now, read your agreement first and start with a bar that company does not serve.
