Family Face-Off: ready in minutes, nothing to learn

Teams guess the most popular answers to a survey question, and you reveal them on the big screen. Pick a ready-made pack, put the board on the TV and play. The scores add up by themselves.

Ready-made packs - two free Family Face-Off packs to start, the premium packs with a paid plan
Phones are the buzzers - teams buzz in from a phone, in the browser, with no app and no account
Nothing to learn - Host Coach tells you what to do now and gives you one line to say out loud
Free to play online - Family Face-Off is free on every plan, the free plan too

Rather run a quiz? Bar Trivia and the QuizoParty board come with it too.

What you need to host a trivia night at home

Six things. You almost certainly own five of them already, and the sixth is free.

A screen the room can see

A TV you can cast to, a monitor, a projector, or a laptop propped on the coffee table.

Wifi, and your guests' phones

Every phone is a buzzer. Nobody installs anything - they open a link and they're in.

Any speaker (optional)

Needed only for music rounds, so the room can hear the clips.

Questions you didn't write

A free Trivia pack is two rounds of 10 to 20 questions, with a picture round on the big screen.

A prize worth winning

It does not need to cost anything - see prizes and house rules below.

No pens, no paper, no scoring

Answers, timings and the final table are counted automatically. Nothing to mark.

Five minutes to first question

How to host a trivia night at home in three steps

1

Put the quiz on the TV

Open Quizado on a laptop, tablet or phone and cast it to the TV. A projector, a spare monitor, or just a laptop on the table works exactly the same.

2

Everyone joins from their phone

Guests point a camera at the code on screen, type a team name and pick a mascot. No app store, no accounts, any phone. Latecomers can join mid-game.

3

Pick a pack and press play

Choose a free question pack and press play. On Pro, tick Auto-Host in the lobby and sit down with everyone else: it runs to the final scoreboard without you.

The part nobody else does

Auto-Host runs the quiz.
You get to play.

The worst job at a home trivia night is being the host - reading questions off a phone, marking answers, arguing about spelling. Turn on Auto-Host, part of Pro, and that person joins a team instead.

Runs the clock

Each question goes up on the big screen with a countdown, then locks itself. The room keeps up without a quizmaster.

Keeps every score

Answers, timings, bonuses and the final table - all counted, nothing to mark.

Pauses when you do

Snacks, an argument, a phone that died - hit pause and pick it back up.

A pack, one tap

Twenty questions across a warm-up and a picture round, in about 20 minutes.

Auto-Host - what it does for you
1
Everyone joins

A code goes on the TV. Phones are in, teams are named, mascots picked.

2
Question up + timed

Large on the big screen, with a countdown the whole room can see, then answers lock.

3
Answer revealed

Correct answer, who got it, who was fastest. No marking, no disputes.

4
Scores update

The leaderboard reshuffles on the big screen between questions.

5
Next round starts itself

Round intro, difficulty ramp, and a finale worth double.

Auto-Host onor host it yourself, manually
The running order

A trivia night format that works in a living room

Five rounds, about 50 minutes, one clear winner. Short enough that nobody drifts off to their phone. A pack is two rounds, so stack two or three to build the night below.

Round
Format
Why it's there
Time
1
Warm-up - everyone answers
No clock, every correct team scores. Gets the quiet guests on the board before the stakes rise.
10 min
2
Picture round
A visual change of pace on the big screen - close-ups, logos, film stills. Always the round people talk about.
8 min
3
Music round
Play clips through any speaker. Levels the field: the person who knows no capitals knows every intro.
10 min
4
Buzzer race
First phone to tap gets the answer. This is the round that makes people stand up.
10 min
5
Wager finale
Teams bet points before the last question, so whoever is trailing can still steal it. Never ends flat.
7 min

Playing with a big group or a wide age range? Swap round 4 for a second everyone-answers round - no buzzer means no advantage to fast thumbs. The full breakdown is in how to play trivia: rules, rounds and scoring.

Good for

Trivia house party ideas for every occasion

Family game night

Start on an easy pack so the youngest player stays in it, then move up a difficulty for the finale.

Birthdays & house parties

One screen and the phones in the room. Open with Family Face-Off, then play a quiz round.

Christmas & holidays

Seasonal packs for the afternoon when everyone has eaten too much. Pairs with our Christmas questions.

Dinner parties & big groups

Teams of one or teams of six, one phone per team. The free plan lets 4 phones into a Trivia game to try it; a paid plan fits the whole party. Everyone-answers rounds keep a loud room fair.

Prizes and house rules

The prize matters more than its price. What works at home: the winning team picks the next film, gets out of the washing up, keeps a trophy on their shelf until the next quiz, or chooses the pack you play next time. A bag of something chocolate is fine too.

Three house rules save every argument before it starts:

  • Phones face down between rounds. The quiz already runs on their phones, so make looking things up obvious.
  • Teams, not individuals. Pairs at minimum - trivia is a conversation, and a solo player who doesn't know an answer just sits there.
  • The screen is the referee. Scoring is automatic, so nobody has to defend a marking decision. It is the fastest way to end a spelling dispute.

If you're brand new to running one, start with the rules, rounds and scoring. Coming from a console party game? Games like Jackbox that use your phone covers what changes.

Questions

Hosting trivia at home: FAQ

Yes. Pick a monthly plan for the month of your party and cancel it anytime, so you pay for one month. Starter gives you the premium packs and no player cap. Business adds your own logo on the big screen.
No. They point a camera at the QR code on your screen, or type the code, and play in the browser. No app download and no account. It is one tap per answer, which matters when the players range from an eight-year-old to a grandparent.
Minutes. Family Face-Off comes with ready-made packs, and two of them are free, so there is nothing to write and nothing to learn: open a pack, put the board on the TV and play. Host Coach tells you what to do at each step and gives you one line to say out loud.
On the free Home plan, up to 4 player phones join a Trivia game, and you get 2 game starts per 24 hours. Teams you score yourself, without phones, are not capped. A paid plan has no player cap.
Family Face-Off, QuizoParty and Territory can run with no internet in the Quizado desktop app and in the iOS and Android host apps, on a paid plan. The browser cannot host offline, and phone buzzers need the internet, so offline you run the board yourself. Trivia always needs the internet.
Yes, with the Business plan. Your logo, fonts, colours, sounds and a custom background go on the big screen.
Put a quiz on a screen everyone can see, have your guests join from their phones, and play five short rounds with a finale. With Quizado you pick a free question pack, cast it to the TV and run it from your phone, and the scores count themselves. On Pro, Auto-Host also runs the clock and reveals the answers - so the person who set it up still gets to play.
Five rounds, roughly 45-60 minutes, is the sweet spot at home - long enough to feel like a proper quiz, short enough that nobody drifts back to their phone. A free Trivia pack is two rounds of 10 to 20 questions, so play two or three back to back and break for drinks in between.
Split into teams of two to four and use everyone-answers rounds rather than buzzer rounds - every correct team scores, so a big room stays fair and nobody is frozen out by fast thumbs. Teams can share one phone. The free Home plan lets up to 4 phones into a Trivia game; a paid plan has no player cap.
A screen the room can see and wifi. Cast from a laptop or phone to the TV, use a projector, or prop the laptop on the table. Any speaker covers the music rounds.
The free Home plan comes with free packs for Bar Trivia, Family Face-Off and QuizoParty, two of them Family Face-Off packs. Family Face-Off and QuizoParty are free to play online on every plan. The premium packs need a paid plan.
Yes, on every plan - handy for a round about the birthday person or a "how well do you know us" quiz at a wedding party. Writing your own question sets is free; playing them in a game starts on Pro. On the free Home plan you play the ready-made packs and any pack a friend shares with you by link, which is all a normal quiz night needs.
They rejoin with the same code and land back on their team with their score intact. Teams can also share a single phone.
