QuizXpress Alternative

A QuizXpress alternative that runs on the device you already have

QuizXpress is a deep Windows production suite with its own buzzer hardware. Quizado is one app that hosts from a Mac, an iPad, an Android tablet or a browser tab, with the phones in the room as the buzzers.

The short answer

QuizXpress is the better fit for a hardware-driven stage production on Windows, and Quizado is the better fit for a weekly venue night, because it runs cross-platform, needs no keypads and starts on a free plan instead of a yearly licence.

Warum von QuizXpress wechseln?

The host machine has to be a PC

The QuizXpress FAQ states plainly that the software is not available for the Mac (quizxpress.com, checked August 2026). Plenty of venues run on a MacBook, an iPad or nothing but a phone.

Quizado ships desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, native apps for iOS, iPadOS and Android, and a web app that needs no install at all.

Hardware to buy before the first question

Their shop sells keypad and buzzer bundles, receivers and spare units. Check their site for current pricing, then decide whether it is the right capital spend for a Tuesday night.

Quizado spends nothing on hardware. Guests buzz from their own phones, and the scoreboard goes on the TV that is already screwed to the wall.

A suite, when you wanted an app

QuizXpress splits the job across Studio, Live, Director, Quiz Center, Mobile, Minigames and the Galaxy scoreboards. That is a lot of surface for one bartender to learn.

Quizado is one console. Questions, teams, the display window and the running order all live in the same place, and whoever is on shift can pick it up.

A year at a time

The licences in their shop are yearly subscriptions. If the quiz night does not stick, you have already paid for the season after it.

Quizado bills monthly and starts free. Run four nights on the free plan, look at the till receipts, then decide what to pay for.

Writing the questions is still the work

However good the editor is, somebody still sits down on Sunday and writes forty questions about something the regulars have not heard already.

Type a topic into Quizado and get a bar trivia round back, then edit any question you do not like. Monthly AI credits start on Trivia Pro.

Every extra format is another purchase

Their minigames are sold per title, so variety is priced item by item. Check their site for current pricing.

Quizado puts five bar trivia round types in the base product, six with Music Bingo. Family Feud, Jeopardy and Music Bingo arrive with the Hospitality Group plan rather than as separate line items.

Was Quizado besonders macht

Von Grund auf für modernes Bar-Trivia und Live-Events entwickelt.

Host from whatever is behind the bar

The same host console runs on a Windows PC, a MacBook, a Linux box, an iPad, an Android tablet and the browser. If the laptop dies at seven, you finish the night on a phone.

No app for your guests to install

A QR code goes on the TV and on the table tents. Guests scan it and land straight in the game in their phone browser, which matters when half the room arrives after the first round has started.

Phones as buzzers, no keypads to hand out

In a Buzzer Race round the host console locks the first buzz it receives. Nobody hands out keypads and nobody counts them back in at closing.

Rounds written on demand

Give the AI generator a topic, get a bar trivia round, edit it and run it. Good for a local history round, a brewery release or the film everybody watched last week. Monthly AI credits start on Trivia Pro.

Five round types out of the box

Buzzer Race, Everyone Answers, Everyone Scores, Knockout and Wager, with Music Bingo as a sixth on Hospitality Group. Change the shape of the night without changing the software.

A season table, not just a score

Leagues and seasons keep a running table across weeks, which gives the regulars a reason to defend a place. Leagues start on Trivia Pro.

What QuizXpress costs in 2026

QuizXpress publishes a shop, which is refreshing, and the numbers are in euros. Their licensing page lists yearly subscription licences from EUR 369 (quizxpress.com, checked August 2026), with larger device tiers costing more, and it sells buzzer hardware, receivers and minigame titles separately. Shop pages change, so check their site for current pricing before you build a budget on any of it.

Quizado does not sell hardware, so the comparison is only the software line. Start free with the built-in packs, live phone buzzers, big-screen themes and up to sixteen players at one venue, and no card. Neighborhood Pub opens the premium question library and lifts the player cap. Writing your own question sets starts on Trivia Pro, which also adds media rounds with image, audio and video, monthly AI credits, leagues and a custom logo. Hospitality Group adds Family Feud, Jeopardy, Music Bingo, custom fonts and colours, bulk import and up to three venues. The current figures live on the pricing page.

The fair way to read those two lists is that they are priced for different jobs. QuizXpress is priced like a production system you buy once and keep for years, and if you already own a case of their keypads that investment is doing work every week. Quizado is priced like a subscription that has to earn its keep every month. If you are starting from nothing and the first question is whether a quiz night will fill a Tuesday at all, starting at zero is a much cheaper way to find out.

Windows only, and what that means behind the bar

Their own FAQ is direct about it: QuizXpress is not available for the Mac, and the FAQ then lists workarounds for people who own one (quizxpress.com, checked August 2026). Players are catered for on mobile through their Smart Buzzer app and a browser buzzer page, but the machine that runs the show is a PC.

For a production company with a flight case and a dedicated laptop, that is a non-issue. For a venue it is often the whole issue. The device that is actually free on a Tuesday is the manager MacBook, the office iPad, or a phone. Quizado runs on all of them, and on Windows and Linux too, and the browser version needs no install, so a stand-in host can run the night from a machine they have never used before.

The second screen works the same way everywhere. Quizado opens an external display window that you drag onto the TV or the projector, and it shows the question, the timer and the live leaderboard while the host console stays private on the host device. No extra box, no scoreboard hardware, no cable run to a receiver.

Setup time on a normal Tuesday

QuizXpress is built as a suite. Studio is the authoring tool, Live runs the event, Director drives the show, Quiz Center distributes pub trivia, Mobile handles online play and the Galaxy scoreboards handle the wireless displays. That structure is exactly what a touring quiz producer wants.

A pub does not have a producer. It has a duty manager with twenty minutes between the food service ending and the first question. Quizado is one console: pick a pack, add the teams as they arrive, open the display window, press start. There is nothing to pair and no receiver to remember.

Who should stay, who should switch

Stay with QuizXpress if...

It has been around a long time for good reasons, and some of them will apply to you.

  • +You already own their keypads, buzzers and receivers, and they work
  • +You produce staged shows where physical buzzers are part of the act
  • +You want deep control over every screen layout and light cue
  • +Your host machine is a Windows PC and always will be

Switch to Quizado if...

These are the reasons venues give when they move a weekly night across.

  • +The only spare device in the building is a Mac, an iPad or a phone
  • +You do not want to buy, charge, store or replace buzzer hardware
  • +A different member of staff hosts each week and needs it to be obvious
  • +You want to try a quiz night for a month before committing to a year

How to switch in 3 steps

1

Rebuild one round, not the archive

Open a free account and run one round from the built-in packs. That is enough to see how the console and the display behave. Writing your own question sets starts on Trivia Pro.

2

Run the phones next to the keypads

Host one night with QR-code joining while the keypads stay in the cupboard. Watch how long it takes the room to get in and how a Buzzer Race round feels on your bar wifi.

3

Move the calendar over

Once the room is happy, bulk import the rest of your question bank on a Hospitality Group plan, start a season table and let the yearly licence lapse when it is due.

What QuizXpress does that we do not

QuizXpress is a serious piece of engineering with two decades behind it, and it goes places we do not go. It sells real buzzer hardware, from keypads to LED domes and towers, with wireless scoreboards and even DMX lighting integration. Its Studio editor gives a producer control over the show at a level our display themes do not attempt. If your night is a staged production where the buzzers are part of the theatre, they are the specialists and we are not pretending otherwise.

Their FAQ says QuizXpress is not available for the Mac and points Mac owners at workarounds (quizxpress.com, checked August 2026). Quizado has a native macOS app, plus Windows, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android and a browser version, so a Mac needs no workaround.
No. Players buzz from their own phones after scanning a QR code, and the host console locks the first buzz it receives. The only kit you need is one device to host from and a TV or projector for the display.
Their licensing page listed yearly subscription licences from EUR 369 (quizxpress.com, checked August 2026), with hardware and minigame titles sold separately. Prices move, so check their site for current pricing before you budget. Quizado starts on a free plan and its paid figures are on the pricing page.
Bulk import comes with the Hospitality Group plan, which is the usual route for a host with years of rounds in spreadsheets. Writing your own question sets starts on Trivia Pro, where you can also paste questions in through the editor or generate fresh bar trivia rounds with AI credits and edit them.
Yes. Family Feud and Jeopardy are host-run formats where you read the question, the room answers out loud and you award the points. Family Feud, Jeopardy and Music Bingo are on Hospitality Group. Name That Tune rounds are there too, and bar trivia has five round types of its own, six with Music Bingo.
No. There is no offline mode. The host device and the player phones both need a connection. If your function room has a dead spot, test the host position before the first night.
Sixteen on the free plan, which is enough for a small room or a test night. Every paid plan lifts that cap, and teams can share one phone if a table would rather answer together.
QuizXpress mentions a demo in their FAQ. On Quizado the free plan has no trial clock: it stays free, and you only pay when you want the bigger player cap, your own question sets, the media rounds, the AI credits or the game-show formats. The Hospitality Group trial is a separate thing at seven days, and it needs a card.
