Host Territory

Territory is host-run. Two teams duel over pictures, you judge each answer, and the first clock at zero loses its squares.

Every plan

Captions are on the video.

Before you start

Territory plays on every plan, the free Home plan too. The free nights play in full; premium nights need Starter or higher. 4 to 16 teams play. Nobody needs a phone: teams answer out loud.

  1. Choose Territory and a night

Select New Game in the sidebar, then the Territory card. Under Pick a night, choose a night. Under How long?, keep Until one team owns the board or pick a time limit. Then select Play.

  2. Add the teams

A new game opens with four teams, Team 1 to Team 4, so you can start straight away. Rename or remove them as you like. Type a name and select Add Team for each extra team. After a Trivia night, select Import from Trivia, pick the night and how many top teams come onto the board, then select Import.

  3. Set the rules

Under Settings, select Change next to Categories to keep Random draw or pick You choose and set a category for each team. Next to Time bank per team, choose the time bank and what A pass costs. To change the night or the time limit, select Change on New Game under Check the night.

  4. Play with no internet

In the desktop app, while you are online, select Download for offline on a night under Pick a night. The mobile apps download a night by themselves when you open it online. With no connection, New Game > Territory lists the nights on this device. Offline play needs a paid plan or the 7-day trial. Importing teams from Trivia needs a connection.

  5. Start the game

Select Start Territory. Select Game Screen in the top bar to show the board to the room.

  6. Draw a challenger

Select Draw a challenger. A random team lights up on the big screen and calls out a neighbour to challenge. Tap that team on the board or in the list, or select Random neighbour.

  7. Run the duel

Call one player from each team to the front and select Start duel. The challenger answers first. Select Correct (Space) for a right answer and Pass (P) when they pass. The first clock at zero loses.

  8. Duel again or draw next

The winner takes the loser's squares and the loser is out. Let the winner duel again, or select Draw next. The game ends when one team owns the board or the time limit runs out.

Tips

  • A picture that will not load or is unclear? Select Bad picture - skip, no penalty.
  • Press Esc or select Pause to stop both clocks. Select Resume to carry on.
  • Wrong call? Undo in the top bar puts the board and both clocks back.
  • The duel plays in the defender's category, so teams that know their neighbours can choose an easy fight.

Questions

Do players need phones?

No. One player from each team comes up and answers out loud. You judge on your control panel.

How long does a game take?

Every team but the winner loses one duel. 16 teams take about 30 to 45 minutes, and the lobby shows an estimate for your teams. To end earlier, pick a time limit under How long? on New Game: the biggest territory then wins.

What happens on a tie at the time limit?

Two of the tied teams play one last duel in a category neither of them owns.

Can I play Territory with no internet?

Yes, in the desktop app and the mobile apps. Download a night while you are online: with Download for offline under Pick a night in the desktop app, or by opening it in the mobile apps. Offline play needs a paid plan or the 7-day trial.
